Frequently Asked Questions:

Can certain foods repair damaged kidneys?
No single food can repair damaged kidneys. A healthy eating pattern can, however, support kidney health and help manage conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes that can damage the kidneys.

Do I need to avoid bananas, oranges, tomatoes, and potatoes if I have kidney disease?
Not necessarily. Potassium needs are individualized. Your blood potassium level, kidney function, medications, and treatment plan all matter. People on dialysis should continue following the potassium recommendations provided by their dialysis team or renal dietitian.

How much sodium should I eat?
For the general population, the recommendation is less than 2,300 mg of sodium per day. If you have chronic kidney disease, your healthcare team may recommend a different amount based on your individual needs.

What kidney tests should I ask about?
Two important tests are eGFR, which estimates kidney filtration, and UACR (urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio), which looks for albumin leaking into the urine.
